An on-grid solar system (also called grid-tied or grid-connected system) is connected to the utility grid. It generates solar power during the day, which is first used to power your home/business. Any excess power is exported to the grid, and you get credit for it through net metering. When solar generation is insufficient (night/cloudy days), power is drawn from the grid.

How does net metering work?

Net metering uses a bi-directional meter that records both electricity imported from the grid and excess solar electricity exported to the grid. At the end of the billing cycle, you pay only for the "net" electricity consumed (import - export). If you export more than you import, the credit carries forward to the next month, with annual financial settlement for any remaining credits.

What happens during power cuts?

Standard on-grid solar systems automatically shut down during power cuts for safety reasons (anti-islanding protection). This is to prevent solar power from feeding into the grid while linesmen might be working on repairs. However, we can install hybrid systems or grid-tied systems with battery backup that provide power during outages.

What is the lifespan of an on-grid solar system?
